There is a modern romantic feeling, and when you look down from the front of the history hall, you feel like you are traveling in time. If you look back at the Banggongho Lake, you can feel the pain of history, and you can feel a lot of it.

Mokpo Modern History Museum 1 (formerly Japanese Consulate) The oldest building in Mokpo was built as a consulate as Mokpo Port opened in October 1897 and Mokpo Japanese Consulate was established in Mokpo in October 1898. Before the construction of the consulate, Japan borrowed Manhocheong Hall (1895 abolished Mokpojin) from the Joseon government, built and transferred a temporary building to the highlands of Yudalsan Mountain, and prepared Mokpo Japanese Consulate and additional facilities such as police stations and post offices. Initially, the Japanese consulate requested 16,028 square meters of land from the Japanese consulate in Mokpo to Muan, but the Joseon government, which received this application, approved only 9,483 square meters. Construction began in January 1900 at a construction cost of 70,000 won and was completed in December, according to Japanese records. Since then, it has been used as Mokpo Director's Office and Mokpo Deputy Government Complex, Mokpo City Hall since 1947, Mokpo Japanese Consulate from 1974, and Mokpo Cultural Center from January 1990 and opened as Mokpo Modern History Hall in 2014. Opened in 2014, the Modern History Museum 1 is a history exhibition hall where you can see everything from Mokpo to modern history, so it is called a treasure trove of modern history, and is displayed on a total of 7 themes on the second floor. Theme 1. Departure to Mokpojin: Manhojin (currently Mokpojin) is also called Manhojin (currently Mokpojin) because Manho was deployed as a camp of the Joseon Navy, and you can see the role and operation of Mokpojin in the southwest sea of the Korean Peninsula. Theme 2. Resume as an opening port: Mokpo was voluntarily opened in 1897 by King Gojong's decree, and as it grew into one of the three major ports nationwide, you can see the process of making its reputation known as the hometown of Sambaek, cotton, and salt) town. Topic 3. Be the best of resistance: Mokpo was suppressed by the establishment of the Japanese Consulate, Oriental Development Co., Ltd., Mokpo Prison, and Mokpo Police Station in Japanese colonial era, but you can see the historical appearance of protesting through the March 1st Movement, the 48th Movement, and the Youth Movement. Topic 4. Foreign culture spread: After the opening of the port, Christianity, Catholicism, and Japanese Buddhist Dongbonwonsa Temple spread, and public Simsang Elementary School for Japanese children, Mokpo Girls' Middle School, and Muntae Middle School for Koreans also spread various cultures. Theme 5. Age of Popular Culture: After the opening of the port, Mokpo Theater (1920) and Peace Hall (1927) were built in Mokpo to screen modern films, and cultural activities such as various performance activities, opera performances, plays, and popular songs were actively carried out. Theme 6. Let's do the national independence movement together: As an experience corner of Mokpo Modern History Museum 1, various props such as uniforms, hats, and glasses are displayed against the backdrop of the national independence movement on April 8, 1919. Theme 7. Modern City Special Exhibition: Various modern buildings were built in Mokpo, which was the most active in accepting foreign cultures since the opening of the port. In particular, the building models around Mokpo Station and Ogeori, which include Dongbonwonsa Temple, Honam Bank, Yangdong Church, Japanese Consulate, and Japanese houses, are elaborately displayed, so you can see the opening of Mokpo Port. Behind the Museum of Modern History, there is an air defense lake where you can see the traces of Japan's preparation for war.
